foster Care guidelines

Basic Requirements

  • The primary foster caregiver must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Foster cats must be kept indoors at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • If the foster cat is given access to a screened area or Catio, they should not be left unattended.
  • Keep foster cats separate from personal pets during the initial introduction phase to prevent stress or illness.
  • Some situations will call for a foster cat to be kept separate from personal pets for the duration of the foster period. If you are unable to provide these accommodations, please notify the rescue.

Health & Safety

  • Notify the rescue immediately if your foster cat shows signs of illness, injury, or changes in behavior.
  • Provide fresh food and water daily and keep the litter box clean at all times.
  • Administer any prescribed medications or treatments as instructed by the rescue.
  • Avoid feeding human food or treats unless specifically approved by the rescue.

Environment

  • Create a safe, quiet space for your foster cat to acclimate, especially when they first arrive.
  • Remove any hazardous items (e.g., toxic plants, small objects, electrical cords) from the foster area.
  • Ensure foster cats have access to soft bedding, toys, and scratching posts to enrich their environment.

Socialization

  • Spend quality time with your foster cat to help with socialization but allow them to adjust to new surroundings at their own pace.
  • Monitor interactions between the foster cat and other pets or household members to ensure everyone’s safety.
  • Be patient and understanding; some cats may take longer to trust and relax.

Communication

  • Keep the rescue updated on the cat’s progress, behavior, and personality to assist in the adoption process.
  • Report any issues or concerns immediately—don’t hesitate to ask for advice or support!
  • Attend any scheduled veterinary check-ups or events as agreed with the rescue.

Adoption Events & Transfers

  • If requested, bring your foster cat to adoption events or facilitate introductions to potential adopters.
  • Do not transfer your foster cat to another person or household without prior approval from the rescue.

End of Fostering

  • If you are unable to continue fostering, provide at least 7-days notice so the rescue can arrange alternative care.
  • Understand that the final decision regarding the adoption or placement of foster cats rests solely with the rescue.
